29th Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology & Conservation

Auction item FAQs

How do I donate an item?

An auction item donation form will become available for download closer to the symposium. The general procedure for donating items is:

  1. Pack your item(s) in your bag to bring to the symposium
  2. Download the auction items form (not yet available)
  3. Fill in a separate form for each item
  4. When you arrive at the symposium bring your auction item(s) & form(s) with you to registration. Someone will be there to accept them

N.B. if you have a "big ticket" item to offer please contact info@turtlesbrisbane2009.org in advance to let us know. We may do some pre-marketing where appropriate to ensure your item gets the attention it deserves when it comes to be auctioned.

Does my item have to be turtle related?

No, although the majority of what is bought along usually is in some way (sea turtle items appeal to sea turtle people!).

Does my item have to be worth a lot of money?

No. Even "low cost" items can raise worthwhile money - some even sell for far more than their cost price simply because the item is unusual, unique, or more than one person has fallen in love with it. However, it is important that each year there are also a number of "big ticket" items that trigger bidding frenzies. If you have the capacity to donate such an item please do so!

What sorts of things sell well at auction?

  • Cultural items
  • Handmade items
  • "Experiences" e.g. vouchers for accommodation or tours
  • Jewellery
  • Eco-friendly items
  • Unusual or unique items
  • Items that are easy to take home

What can't be used?

  • Anything illegal, e.g. weapons
  • Don't bring sea turtle products (or those made from other CITES protected species)
  • Don't bring anything into Australia that contains seeds or flowers - they put our flora and fauna at risk and customs will take them away from you anyway.
  • We are discouraging people from bringing plastic items, particularly those with poor environmental credentials (short lifespans).

How can I help make sure my item has maximum impact?

Provide as much information as possible about your item. Bidders love to know where it came from, who made it, who donated it and if it has some history attached to it. An indication of its dollar value helps the auction organisers sort items.
